Plenty on the line when NASCAR roars into Richmond

By Bud L. Ellis

When NASCAR returns to Richmond International Raceway for the Air Guard 400 on Sept. 11, there will be plenty of emotion on display.

Obviously, the date Sept. 11 stirs the deepest feelings in Americans, and in a sport as patriotic and rooted in tradition as racing, those feelings will be amplified on this poignant anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

As far as the racing itself, the Air Guard 400 is the last race before the Sprint Cup Series’ Chase for the Championship.

For drivers on the bubble of making the 12-man playoff, Richmond represents the cut-off point, the time to determine whether the final two months will include racing for the points championship.

Like him or not, it’s hard to ignore Kyle Busch. The winner of the Heath Calhoun 400 at Richmond on May 1, Busch last weekend became the first driver in NASCAR history to sweep the Craftsman Truck Series, Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series races in the same weekend, turning that trick at Bristol.

The Air Guard 400 begins at 7:30 p.m.
